Why is Sea Salt is the chloride NaCl and not another?
Sea water is salty because minerals of different factors lead to them. Then the salt must contain all the elements and not just sodium. So why is it that when sea water evaporates, you get NaCl (chemical formula of our table salt) and chemical chloride not another?
Sea water is rich in dissolved ions of all types of freshwater. However, the proportions of various solutes differ dramatically. For instance, although seawater is about 2.8 times more enriched with bicarbonate water river based on molarity, the percentage bicarbonate in seawater as a ratio of all ions in solution is much lower than in water rivers, bicarbonate ions constitute 48% of solutes in river water, but only 0.41% of all ions in salt water. Such differences are due to different residence times of solutes in sea water, sodium and chlorine have long residence time, while calcium (vital for carbonate formation) tends to precipitate much faster. scientific theories behind the origins of sea salt started with Sir Edmond Halley in 1715, who proposed that salt and other minerals were carried out at sea by rivers, having been washed from the soil by runoff from rain. Arriving the ocean, these salts would be maintained and focused on the process of evaporation (see Hydrologic Cycle) water is removed. Halley noted that the low number of lakes in the world locked (like the Dead Sea and the Caspian Basin endorreica see), most have high salt content. Halley calls this process "continental erosion" theory. Halley is partially correct. In addition, sodium was leached from the seabed, where early oceans formed. The presence of other dominant ion of salt, chlorine, results in the release of chlorine gas (such as hydrochloric acid) and other gases inside the Earth through volcanoes and hydrothermal vents. Sodium and chloride ions subsequently became the elements most abundant salt. Ocean salinity has been stable for billions of years, probably due to a chemical / tectonic system which removes the salt deposited, for example, sodium and chloride sinks include evaporite deposits, the burial of pore water, and reactions of basalt from the bottom sea [5] Since the creation of the ocean, the more sodium is leached from the seabed, but is captured in sedimentary layers covering the ocean floor.
